The End!

Well we have good news to report -our foster puppy (now known as Gracie) has found her forever home with family friends and loyal blog readers Bill & Terry!
When we first found her, we decided once we got home and got settled, we would hit the phones and make finding her a good home our mission.  We had a list of people who we were going to target (actually most of you reading were probably going to get a call!)  Bill and Terry were on that list.  Saturday night while we had our visitors over, we got a call and Bill said "I wanna see the puppy!"  So we brought her over Sunday and she stayed with them for a few hours.  Let me tell you those few hours were so long, we were missing her so much it was ridiculous!  It was then that we wondered are we making a mistake?  Should we be keeping her?  You see the problem with our little souvenir is that she is the sweetest dog either of us has ever met.  It's pretty much impossible to not fall in love with her.  So when she came back, obviously Bill & Terry said they really wanted her, we just had her vet visit the next day.  Monday, we both went back to work and at first I told Brian that maybe he should go home for lunch since she was in the crate.  Later I decided it would be best if he didn't.  If anyone remembers way back when we got Lincoln it took him about 3 months to get the potty training thing right.  This meant that during Brian's busy season, I would come home every single day and have to clean the crate, it was a dark time for me!  A girl can only take so much cleaning up after someone, no matter how cute!  So I told Brian to not go home and I crossed my fingers that I would come home to a HUGE mess!  Of course I was not so lucky, and I came home to the little angel in her crate so excited and perfectly clean!  Ugh!  We went to the vet and once we found out that she was healthy, we called Bill.  They were so anxious and said they missed her already!  This was probably the hardest thing we've ever had to do.  Remember way back in the beginning of the blog when I mentioned we were doing this before we had to grow up?  Well yea, I guess this was our first lesson of growing up.  You see we've been pretty lucky to not have any real tough decisions yet.  Getting married, buying our house - eh those were easy!  Even getting our puppies, things just seem to fall into place.  Now we actually had to make the "right decision".  I've heard a lot about this "right decision" through my years but I had no idea how hard it was!  The beauty of not being a grown up is that you never ever really have to worry about making these choices.  I can think of a few things that I wanted growing up but it was never my choice!  And it was so easy in those teenage years to just hate my parents for being the meanest and not giving me what I wanted!  Can I go back to them making decisions for me?  Being a grown up and thinking about things logically, weighing the pros and cons and thinking about all the parties involved really truly sucks!  Well as hard as it was to part with Gracie, it is definitely the right decision, for everyone!  Our boys definitely loved playing with her but they definitely gave us a few looks like wait, is this one staying?!?  Plus I feel like there's nothing like the love you get from a dog.  We are lucky enough to have two of the cutest, funniest, most-loving puppies and now Bill and Terry have probably the sweetest little girl out there!  We are so happy she has such a great home and bringing her there last night just confirmed we made the right decision.  As soon as Terry came to the door, she was wagging her tail so much her whole bottom half was shaking (the dog, not Terry).  Once she went inside, there were toys and she just picked up and started playing, jumped on the couch and was thrilled!
So now that we have found a home for our souvenir from TN, our trip is officially over.  The unpacking is done.  The souvenirs have been distributed.  The laundry - well it's getting there!  This was definitely an experience that we will never ever forget!  After planning this trip for months and then actually going, I can't believe it's over.  It was a TON of running around.  There was definitely a lack of sleep.  We definitely should have invested in air fresheners driving around with 3 weeks of laundry.  Brian may need a chiropractor after sleeping in the car sitting straight up.  But those things are so worth it when we look back at all we did!  It was truly an amazing experience!  We saw some of the most impressive architecture; some of the most beautiful rivers, mountains and sunsets; and some of the greatest cities ever!  We met so many interesting people but had some great nights just the two of us!  I still am in shock over how fantastic the weather was, I mean sure in the south I thought I might go up in flames because it was so hot but it's better than our trip getting rained out!  And I think I'm going through withdrawal from all the fabulous meals (and desserts) we had.  And last but definitely not least, we are so lucky to have such AMAZING family and friends!  One of the best parts of our trip is that while we were traveling across the country, we got to visit people all over the place.  This gave us the opportunity to see people we haven't seen in a long time and people we don't get to see too often, which was so wonderful!  Speaking of all of our friends and family stops, I don't know how we lucked out but we must know the most hospitable people in the world!  People gave us comfy beds to sleep in, awesome meals, great company and they were fantastic personal tourguides!  So thank you so so much to everyone we got to visit on this incredible trip!  And of course, thank you to all the rest of our family and friends for following us on this journey!  Even though we didn't get to comment on all of your comments, we read them all and it was so nice to share this amazing experience with all of you and get all your feedback and love from home!  If anyone has ever thought about doing a trip like this, you have to do it!  We are so lucky to have so many different and fabulous things right here in our own backyard!  And we only saw a teeny tiny bit!  If anyone needs any tips, please reach out to us, we've got plenty to say (in case you didn't notice).  And for anyone looking for some stats...

There's no place like home...

Well our trip is officially over...
We woke up this morning in Maryland with pancakes for breakfast (Thank you Michael!), then we played with Shania for a little bit and loaded her into the car.  Let me tell you, if you're looking for a green hotel, no need to travel all the way to Lake Tahoe.  I'm pretty sure Michelle & Michael have them totally beat!  They have solar panels, recycle everything, have some crazy shower head that shuts itself off and even took us to a "green" doggie store before we left!  Since they are such a fantastic foster aunt & uncle, they bought Shania a new toy for the road and a fun little braided bone (yum- she said).  But they could never forget their nephews so they even got them some goodies (Linc & Teddy say Thanks Aunt Michelle & Uncle Michael!!).  After our little shopping extravaganza, we got in the car for the last time.  Thanks so much to Michelle & Michael for letting us stay with you for our final night!  And also for not minding that we had a stowaway and taking such good care of all of us!!  We will be back again soon and have more time to spend... as long as we don't find any puppies in Delaware on the way down!

So we drove back up to NY and Shania pretty much slept the entire time.  Today she decided she didn't want to sleep between the seats so she squished herself between the backs of our seats and the giant cooler in the back seat.  I have no idea how she thinks that's comfortable, but I didn't hear any complaints!
We also have some big news to report - Brian no longer hates Idaho!  That's right folks, once we got onto the Belt Parkway and I explained that today was actually NOT the Idaho, NY or Long Island fair and that there in fact was no reason for the traffic, he caved in and agreed that Idaho is not the devil.  I'm glad we could end our trip on a good note!
So after we got out of traffic, we dropped Shania off to her foster Restivo grandparents house.  Since we were away for 3 weeks we figured our best bet would be to not show up at our house with a dog.  Didn't think the puppies would like that too much.  Okay well part of me thought they would be more excited to see her than me but whatever the reason, we left her there!  Even though they are only a mile away from our house it seemed like we couldn't get home soon enough!  I really hope when we do have kids that I love them as much as I love these little guys!  After being away from them for so long, we couldn't wait to see them!  And apparently, they couldn't wait either!  It was so great, we walked in the door and they were jumping on us, hugging us, kissing us and just so so excited!  If you could see the scratches I have all over me, you would see how happy they were too have us home!  And I always say, if you don't have bruises, you're just not loved enough... I swear it's the puppies! =P
We gave them their souvenirs (matching frisbees from The Alamo) and they loved them!  Teddy actually got REALLY good at catching a frisbee while we were gone, he must have been practicing.

So once they destroyed the frisbees, they played dress up for a little.  They really liked Mommy's Bourbon St beads... actually Teddy didn't want to take them off!

Then we took them for a walk over to the Restivos!  Of course Lincoln acted like a psycho because he may or may not have a chemical imbalance, but once we got them all on the leashes, they were great!  Oh and a HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY to our little Lincoln and his brother Spike (they're 2 now)!!!
We got them home just in time for my parents and Carolyn to come over for some pizza, souvenirs and to meet our foster puppy.  Then she had even more surprise visitors, my Uncle Hot Shot and cousin Chris stopped by to meet the "vagrant dog" we picked up.  I call her foster pup, I think it has a much nicer ring to it!  We've decided that we really want to find a home for her with someone that we know.  First off because then obviously we know she will be taken care of.  Secondly (selfishly) we want to still see her every so often!  So we've decided we'll give it a week to try and convince someone we know and love to take her in and after that we'll open it up.  Obviously we wish we could keep her but 200 pounds of puppy may be too much for us to handle.  Plus I think if we got 3, what would be another and another and so on... sooner or later we would be the (way cooler because it's not cats but still weird) dog people.  Even though, it's hard to not be able to have this every night, it's for the best!  This is like my dream couch!
But seeing as Teddy was a rescue and he was lucky enough to have a wonderful foster family take such great care of him until we were lucky enough to adopt him, we figure, this is our way to pay it forward and try to find her a great home!
So tomorrow morning Brian's parents are coming over for breakfast, souvenirs and some puppy play and then it's off for another home visit for Shania!  Hopefully all goes well!  I'm not ending the blog yet because I want to be able to end it with good news that we found a home for our little foster puppy so everyone cross your fingers that she continues to be a little angel!!  Oh and I'm also too lazy and tired to end it, so hopefully tomorrow will be it!  Good night and wish us luck!!

The adventures of Shania

Today was a typical Brian and Colleen sort of day.  We woke up, stopped at Starbucks to upload a blog post and hit the open road!  We were about 200 miles outside of Nashville when we decided to stop for gas.  After getting gas, we went to get back on the highway and saw this little girl on the side of the road.

Brian pulled over and I got out of the car.  She came running over to me and was so friendly!  She had a shock collar but it was filthy and she didn't have any tags so someone wasn't taking such great care of her.  We asked around and found an animal hospital a few exits away and they scanned her but unfortunately she is not micro-chipped so now she's a souvenir for some lucky blog reader!  She is so so sweet and she's probably only about a year old and 20ish pounds.  We decided to name her Shania after Brian's favorite country girl.  She loves people and is very content to just lay down and sleep on the pillow we gave her.  We were in the car for about 10 hours driving to Michelle & Michael's and she switched off taking naps with both of us and playing with her water bottle.  When we got here she was so excited for more people and just loves to play with everyone.
Shania decided to hang back and relax as she's had a long day and we all headed out to Woodstock Inn for dinner.  This is my first biker bar ever!  I was a little nervous that we would run into some Hells' Angels but we lucked out!  After having my first Maryland cheesesteak -which was actually really good- we went back to the house.  Michael gave us some brief history on the way back of the surrounding towns to continue our learning part of the trip, so helpful!  We got back and played with Shania a little and now we're off for our last night's sleep in someone else's bed!  We can't believe this is our last night but it was definitely the best last night!  Michael even mentioned something about pancakes in the morning... so exciting!!
Oh and Terry, see above picture for the grandbaby... think any of her grandparents will want to keep her??? =)

New Orleans, Memphis, Nashville...oh my!

So after digesting our yummy dinner and beverages and doing a blog post, we hit Bourbon St!  It’s so cool, they actually close the street down from 6-6 so no one can drive down and everyone can just roam around.  It’s basically like a huge block party… well except there’s a lot of people you wouldn’t invite to your block party that hang around these parts.  After just walking around in the street for a while we figured we were ready.  Our first stop was Pat O’Brien’s to get a world famous Hurricane!

We got there, ordered our hurricanes and so the night began!  I actually hated it because I assumed since it was red it would be fruity, not so.  Here’s the reason for the lack of fruitiness… I asked the bartender what was in this concoction – their passion fruit mix and 4 shots of rum.  Okay so yea 4 shots of rum is why this was not yummy as I was expecting, silver lining – only $8!!  So we sat around with our hurricanes for a bit and then the fun began.  We started talking to these 2 guys (who each had about 3 empty hurricane cups) and they were awesome!  When the photographer came around to rip people off, Bill told us to get in a picture and he bought it for us!  He also bought us our second hurricane – oh goody!  I’m sure it’s understood that the second one was not as bad as the first but it was still pretty brutal.  So this went on for a few hours.  We were mostly talking to Bill as Ben kept disappearing but he was definitely another interesting person!  Don’t worry Sam, I asked him if he thinks it’s interesting to kidnap girls and put them in his trunk and he said no, so I was safe!  Well actually he said only on Thursdays but it was Tuesday, so I was safe!  Oh and here’s an interesting little history lesson.  We knew that we had to come to Pat O’Brien’s for a hurricane but we had no idea why.  So Bill asked one of the guys working there to explain the history and I think I got most of it right, here goes…  So when it first opened, it was a speakeasy during prohibition!  Apparently everyone was loving them some whiskey and bourbon and no one really cared about rum.  So Pat’s had all this rum (since it was so cheap) and then started bartering for these funny looking glasses (hurricane glasses).  To get people to drink their abundance of rum, they invented the hurricane and when people would buy it, they would get a free hurricane glass!  Pretty interesting, right?  So after we were there for a few hours and a few hurricanes, it was time to say goodbye to Pat’s and our new friends (see below for Brian, Ben, Colleen, Bill)

So we grabbed our to-go cups and headed back out.  We definitely saw some things I was not expecting.  I obviously knew there were bars all over the place but I had no idea how many strip clubs and trick strip clubs there were!  There was a place called Rick’s Sporting Bar which you would think is a sports bar… until you see the slutty dressed mannequin swinging out the window!  Tricked you!  Some other places were not as tricky, like the one with a girl spanking herself in the doorway – I knew what that was right away!  So we continued down and I saw a Howl at the Moon (chain dueling piano bar that we went to in San Antonio).  I really wanted to go in but Brian said we just went to one the night before.  He should’ve let me go… Instead, we walked by the next place that sounded like they had good music and we went in there.  I ordered us drinks specifying I needed the bartender to make something fruity with rum.  So he made us rum punches that were disgusting, half the size and $12 each!  We sipped it, listened to the band that turned out to actually not be good and left.  We threw the $20 in the nearest garbage and headed back down the street.  That’s when I saw what seemed like the greatest idea ever… Daiquiris and pizza!!  So we went in there.  Brian wasn’t interested, I have no idea why!  Oh wait, yes I do.  Apparently New Orleans pizza is the worst pizza you could probably ever get in your life!  Of course when you’re drinking, everything tastes better, right?  Not so.  That’s how bad this pizza was.  So I decided to wash it down with my strawberry daiquiri (in my Jester souvenir cup) but this was even worse than the pizza!!  It tasted like nail polish.  I think it might have been.  So since we just threw away the $20 crap punch and my 1 slice of terrible pizza and disgusting daiquiri cost us another $16, I finished the pizza.

Then we left and I gave it my all with the daiquiri but just couldn’t do it.  I don’t know if it’s physically possible for anyone to drink this entire thing.  It’s just so bad I can’t imagine anyone being able to finish more than we did.  So I threw the rest out and brought the Jester up to the room!  Then back out!  We were walking around and saw Bill and Ben at a Lucky Dog hot dog stand!  Bill was buying everyone hot dogs and sausages, even the homeless guy who claimed to have Lebron James’ sneakers.  This is also when we met the 43 year old toothless prostitute, speaking of interesting.  We think she wanted to marry Ben… I guess in an effort to entice him, she flashed him.  Brian was lucky enough to have turned around at just the right time and catch this.  He hasn’t been able to sleep since.  We went back to the room again and when we were leaving ran into these 2 British ladies!  They were so nice and even gave me beads!  So I officially got beads in New Orleans and don’t worry Mom, they were given to me as a nice gesture, nothing was done in return!
So we headed across to the next bar which was Brian’s choice, since I had already proved I have poor decision making skills.  While we were there, Bill walked in with a woman who had teeth.  And she had money pinned to her shirt, but she wasn’t  a hooker, here I go learning again!  Apparently it’s tradition in the south to go out on your birthday and people pin money on you or buy you a drink!  So Bill was buying her a beer and we wanted to participate so she told me we should do a shot.  Even better, she said that it’s good luck for both of us, yay!  Here is me and the birthday girl… oh and pay close attention to the blonde on the end of the picture, she’s our next story.

So now we started talking to this blonde lady and the guy she was with.  They seemed pretty interesting.  They were from California, blah blah blah oh and while she was super nice, he was TOTALLY creepy!!  Oh and we found out they were staying in the same hotel as us, small world!  Okay now for weird... So then they invited us up to their room for a drink.  When I get nervous I freeze so I said oh I don’t know, Bri?  He was so thrilled I threw this one to him.  He politely told them that we would be staying out for a while.  Now in my best attempt to see the best in people, maybe they thought it would be more relaxing to have a drink in their room?  Maybe the noise was getting to them?  No I’m sorry, there’s no good excuse.  Our hotel was on Bourbon St, there’s no getting away from the noise.  There’s a few realistic options here.  First and we’re pretty sure this was it, they were swingers.  Not sure what kind of vibe we’re giving out to attract people like that but this will probably put an end to me talking to strangers… well at least for a little while.  Second option is that they wanted to get us to the hotel and rob us and then lastly they just wanted to murder us.  I’ll tell myself they were swingers and pretend to be flattered, this should help me sleep a little better.  So they left and we ran back to Lucky Dog to report to Bill what happened.
As strange as it sounds, this is where we spent the rest of our night.  We were talking to the Lucky Dog couple (a real couple that works the cart together) and anyone that would come for a lucky dog!  Totally not funny but I thought I should include, so if you're looking for entertainment skip this part.  The lucky dog girl was telling me that she’s not allowed to work by herself.  Apparently she walks to and from work (about 45 minutes) and one night while walking by herself, she was held at gunpoint and raped.  So this burst my bubble a little bit.  Apparently when you go down a few blocks, it’s a really bad neighborhood.  So her boyfriend doesn’t let her walk by herself anymore.  They were both really nice and as much of a downer as that little chat was, it really got me to thinking about how lucky we really are.  We went back to the room around 3:30 and refused to set the alarm!
In the morning we got up, got ready and walked down to Café du Monde for the much anticipated beignets!  They were delicious, pretty much zeppoles but they’re called French donuts so you’re allowed to eat them for breakfast.  In the interest of time, we got them to go which was maybe not such a good idea!  My entire right side was covered in powdered sugar from walking and eating them, well worth it!

Okay back to serious so skip if uninterested...I was really expecting New Orleans to be our fun stop where we would just have a great time and not worry about anything.  I am so surprised with how much we learned, not just about the history of the hurricane, buying birthday drinks and burying people above ground.  I think we were so lucky to have had the tour guide we did on our bus tour.  We both thought it was so great to have someone actually from the 9th ward giving us the tour and telling us about Katrina first hand.  And now to meet the Lucky Dog couple and see how their life is.  I complain about driving an hour to and from work and I’m safe in my car.  They have to walk 45 minutes each way… and don’t forget it’s ridiculously hot out there!  But they were both still so positive and nice.  They do the walk because they have to and they are fine with it.  So in conclusion for New Orleans, we had a great time, met some very interesting people (mostly good) and would love to come back!
So Wednesday morning we started driving up to our next stop, Tennessee.  We stopped in Memphis to go to Graceland.  Neither of us are really Elvis fans but we figured it’s one of those things we had to do while we were here.  We were so glad we did!  This was such an excellent tour!  If you’re an Elvis fan, you really HAVE to go and if you’re not and you’re within 2 hours, you really should make a point to go.  The tour takes you around his house and gives you a history of all the rooms, it has clips of Elvis, Lisa Marie and Priscilla on there as well.  I never really knew too much about him but one thing that really impressed me was how charitable he was.  They had cases full of checks that he wrote to different charities, he gave cars to people and it seems like anytime someone went to him with a need, he would help them out.  I was also impressed with how hot he was!  I guess I always had the picture of him as the older, bigger Elvis, but they had pictures of him when he was younger and yea, he’s a hottie!  And don't worry there was fun for Brian as well, he was quite taken with Ms Priscilla... Oh and they also had home videos of them around Graceland and it was so cute to see them as a family.  Apparently he was very family oriented and really took care of his parents as well.  Another crazy thing was just the amount of awards he had, I can’t even describe how many, I’ve never seen anything like it.  The tour ends in the meditation area where he is buried with his parents and grandmother.  There’s also a plaque for his stillborn twin brother, we had no idea he was a twin.  The audio tour ends with him singing and it’s just really touching.  This is definitely a must see!
After this, we went to Rendezvous for dinner.  They are famous for their ribs so Brian got those and I got a pulled pork sandwich.  We were starving and knew we would regret it but got an appetizer anyway.  We got barbecue nachos which was nachos covered with pulled pork, pulled chicken, some amazing cheese, their secret seasoning and their awesome sauce, it was ridiculous.  Needless to say, we had no regrets about ordering the appetizer.  Our dinners were awesome as well and since I don’t like beans & slaw which is what comes with every meal, I substituted pickles – yay!!  So we stuffed our faces again and then back to the car.  We stayed with Brian’s cousin Sara Wednesday and Thursday night in Nashville which was a short 3 hour drive from Memphis – that’s nuthin!
So we got to Sara’s late Wednesday night and she was waiting with fresh baked cookies!!  And it was an entire plate full, so long Doubletree, Sara surpassed them in the first 5 minutes of us being in Nashville!  We stayed up eating cookies and catching up for as long as our eyes would physically stay open, which ended up being after 1 which completely impresses me!  I’m pretty sure when we get back to “normal” I will be falling asleep at like 8 every night for a month.  So Thursday we woke up and started our day in Nashville at this amazing place called the pancake pantry.  I know I keep talking about how great the food is everywhere and I’m totally not lying!  Here’s what makes pancake pantry awesome (before even tasting a thing) when the waitress came around and we were telling her we’re unsure between this and this and this, she suggested we just get one of each!  So you don’t have to actually commit to one type of delicious pancake or ridiculous French toast, you can pretty much create a sampler!  So I got a sugar & spice pancake which was like gingerbread and a raspberry which was like delicious.  They also give you this cinnamon cream syrup which is just to die for.  Oh and the French toast is like nothing you’ve ever had before.  They use crazy bread like Texas Toast and when you order a full order of French toast, it is a bunch of these pieces spread around the plate covering the entire plate and looking like a pretty flower!  Or you can get half order which obviously would be half or like we did just a piece, which is really 2 pieces because this place is so great!  Do I even have to mention how good the hash browns were?  Are you sold yet?  Yea this was definitely a favorite!  Here's a picture of my food.  Please note I had already started because I was so excited.
So we could barely move and we went to see our first historic landmark of the day, the Carter house.  This is the house where the battle of Franklin was fought during the Civil War.  It was pretty cool to see the old house and the battle damage like all of the bullet holes all over the house but what really made this place was our tour guide.  He was the most passionate tour guide we’d ever seen, it was hilarious.  Think Matt Foley from Saturday Night Live (…in a van down by the river), if you haven’t seen it, you should look it up because it’s so funny and because then you can see how entertaining this tour guide actually was!
When our tour was over, Sara took us to downtown Nashville to Robert’s Western World.  Since we had such a crazy breakfast we decided to stick with healthy vegetables as snacks so we got fried pickles and onion rings.  The pickles were spears which is the best way to make a fried pickle (we’ve done research) and they weren’t beer battered, they were breaded (think if a mozzarella stick and a fried pickle had a baby), they were all delicious.  What’s really cool about Nashville is that every place you walk by has music just blaring out.  So there was this live band playing and people doing crazy dancing, swinging, lifting, twirling – yea everything!  It was so cool!  But then we learned there was a celebrity among us!  Three time world champion cowboy Wayne Ford.  Or that’s what it sounded like his name was but Sara googled him and couldn’t find anything.  So we may have seen a famous cowboy… maybe!  We strolled around Broadway (slightly different than NYC Broadway) for a little bit, saw where the Grand Ole Opry used to be and then came back to the apartment to finish off the cookies from last night.  After bumming around for a little bit, we went to the park to see the Parthenon.  Did you know that Nashville is the Athens of the south?  I don’t know why but that’s what it said at the Parthenon!  So they have a full size replica of the Parthenon, right here in Nashville.  It is huge!  The columns are insane!  And I’m not trying to insult Greece but this one appears to be in MUCH better condition than theirs!
After this, we headed back downtown to hear some music and get some more BBQ!  Since Nashville is so music oriented and awesome, they actually have these free concerts every Thursday until the end of October.  It’s basically this big open green where they set up a stage and tents for vendors and people just go with chairs and blankets and listen to a concert for free!  The music is good and everyone is just very laid back- really laid back, not just stoned!  And the best part, it’s open to dogs so we got to see sooooo many little cuties!  We took a break and went over to Jack’s BBQ for some dinner which again was oh so tasty!  Tennesseeans really know their way around a BBQ!  Then on the way back to the concert we stopped at Mike’s for some delicious ice cream!  We stayed at the concert for a while and then back to pass out for our last night in TN!
CONCERT
Our next and final stop is Brian’s sister Michelle and her husband Michael’s house just outside Baltimore.  Even though this will be a day late by the time I upload, we want to wish them both a VERY HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!  We can't wait to see them!  Thanks so much to Sara for being an amazing tour guide, bringing us to such yummy restaurants and for hosting one of our final stops on our trip!  We really appreciate it and can’t wait to see you soon!

NOLA!!!

So we got in to New Orleans late last night and coupled with our unexpected Houston expense, we decided to stay in and go to bed early (1:30).  Since our hotel is on Bourbon, it was pretty loud but we've been doing a bit of running around so that didn't really seem to matter too much!  We woke up early this morning and went to The Court of Two Sisters for their jazz brunch.  By the way, before I forget, big shout out to Tom, Lauren, John & Kelly for all the NOLA tips!  So we were actually a little too early and had some time to do some shopping- which Brian always enjoys!  After shopping we headed back to the court!  We had the best waiter there - Lloyd - who was not happy with my brunch selection.  He wondered why I came all the way to New Orleans to get brunch I could get by me, hmmm, he had a point!  So he offered to make me a plate.  I hope you're sitting down for this.  I tried creamed spinach, cornbread dressing, cajun pasta salad and ... seriously, sit down... okay turtle soup!  They were all actually good, even the soup but I told him I could not finish eating it since it was turtle.  So then he brought me dessert... homemade ice cream... with some sort of hot ... bananas.  Well I felt I owed it to Lloyd, so I tried it.  I don't remember what the bananas were called but they had something crazy on them which actually made them a little more bearable.  So if anyone is ever in New Orleans, definitely, definitely make this a stop.  We were full until dinner, everything was awesome and so was Lloyd!

Then it was off to the Oak Alley Plantation.  Unfortunately I didn't factor in that it was almost an hour away, so it was Amazing Race time!  Tours run every half hour so we got there at 11:54 and caught the 12:00 tour-phew!  The house was so beautiful and the pathway leading to the front of the house is lined with 28 live oak trees (they kept referring to them as live oaks, so I guess maybe there's a difference?!?).  It really is beautiful, especially when you're looking down from the second story balcony.  After the tour, we raced around, took some pictures and ran back to the car since the last team to arrive at the hotel MAY be eliminated... CUE traffic here!  So I had to call our bus tour and tell them we may be a few minutes late...

But we made it... kind of.  So out of the car, onto the bus!  Our tour guide was so great.  She took us through the French Quarter, down to the 9th ward where Katrina hit the hardest, to one of the famous cemeteries, through the Garden District and back!  She was actually from one of the neighborhoods that got hit with 12 foot floods so it was really cool to hear her perspective.  She had all sorts of stories from her friends, neighbors and family.  Since New Orleans is below sea level, they were having problems burying their dead so they had to switch over to above ground tombs.  They can cost $30,000 (100 years ago) and fit about 20 family members.  They don't really look big enough to fit 20 people so she explained that once someone dies, they put them in this tomb, which can get up to about 200 degrees (totally believable as I think it was like 175 outside today) and they are "naturally cremated."  She said they have to wait a year and a day and then re-open the tomb and sweep them into a bag to make room for the next one!  Even if 2 people died at the same time, only one would be buried at a time.  The other would be put into a holding wall until the 1 year, 1 day mark and the family would have to pay rent until they were ready to go in the tomb!  Then off to the garden district.  These houses were amazing!  We saw Sandra Bullock's new home, Nicholas Cage's house that he's selling if anyone is interested and some other people I don't know but the houses were sick!
We had a reservation to go to Emeril's for dinner tonight but decided we're really just not fancy enough and didn't feel like coming back and getting all gussied up so we went to Huck Finn's!  Evangelina (our bus driver) recommended it so we trust her.  We started with some fried pickles -always a favorite- and they did not disappoint!  Oh and we also got drinks in 32 oz souvenir cups- yay!  Brian got the Tiger's Wood which is like a spiked Arnold Palmer and I went with our waiter's recommendation of the Gator Bite which was some blue cool thing that tasted delicious and fruity!  Then we both got Po' Boys for dinner.  A Po Boy is what NYers call a hero, or what Philly calls a hoagie... it's a sandwich.  Brian got muffuletta which I have no idea what is in it... a lot.. he liked it!  And I got shrimp.  But enough about those, I mean they were good but the fries were to die for!  They had some magic orange fairy dust on them, some crazy cajun seasoning, it was ridiculous!  We were pretty stuffed but couldn't leave without having the bread pudding because Evangelina said "it's so good, it's gonna make you wanna slap yer mama"... and it is!!  - Sorry Mom!
So we finished that up and walked back to the hotel... with our cups... and our drink still in there!  Oh yea for those who didn't know, you're allowed to walk around everywhere with drinks.  Our waiter gave us lids with the check, crazy!!  So now we're digesting for a bit and then we're going to head out for our night on Bourbon St!  There's some interesting places around here... Big Daddy's World Famous Love Acts is just across the street!  It's world famous, gotta be some good wholesome fun, right?  Depending how tonight goes, we plan on waking up early to go to the New Orleans River Walk then get some beignets from Cafe du Monde!  Then off to Tennessee to see Elvis, and even better, Brian's cousin Sara!

Everything IS bigger in Texas!

Now where were we… oh yes in San Antonio! We packed up, checked out, got more cookies (last doubletree-sad) and waited for the trolley. Luckily we actually got a trolley, not just a bus running the trolley line, so that was fun!
We went down to the Alamo around 10:30 with super low expectations. Everything we read had people saying how it was so boring and not worth it which was weird because it’s a historic landmark so I would think that you would go into it expecting it to be an old building and not really that exciting. How could it disappoint? So we allowed ourselves about an hour to two for the Alamo. When we got there, we paid for the audio tour and got to it. Before we knew it, Brian looked at his phone and it was 1:00! We were nowhere near done and had no idea it was so late! We ended up being super impressed with everything. It was so cool to be standing on the ground that these men died on fighting for something that they believed in so strongly. We watched a short video and they had a few volunteers telling stories of things that happened. For a real short version, the battle of the Alamo was when Santa Ana (a self proclaimed Mexican dictator) brought about 1500 Mexican troops to re-claim the Alamo which was taken over by the Texans looking for freedom from Mexico. Eventually he had even more men and on the day that they charged The Alamo he had approximately 2500 men! The crazy part is that these 2500 men were fighting about 200 Texans. Obviously they didn’t stand a chance and almost all of the men were killed. But they had such passion for their cause, it really was amazing. Shortly after the battle of The Alamo, Texas did win their freedom obviously and The Alamo was turned into a warehouse. The Daughters of the Republic of Texas eventually bought it back and restored it out of respect to the hundreds of men who died there. This was definitely worth going to and SO much better than we expected!
And of course, again it was BLAZING hot out! So when we left and crossed the street I decided to get a snow cone from the little gangster cart and to prove how far I’ve come, I did not get skeeved when the woman used her hand to round out the top of my snow cone. Okay well I’m lying, I totally got skeeved but shrugged it off and ate it anyway, look at me!! So then we went over to the real Riverwalk, not the shady one we were hanging out at yesterday. I was so sad we didn’t get to do more because it really was so pretty! The river itself was pretty filthy actually, there was a lot of trash in it when you got up close but the walks and the bridges and restaurants were so cute! They have lights hanging from the trees too so it’s probably so pretty at night! There were so many restaurants too, we were so upset we missed out on them last night, but now we know for next time! If anyone’s planning a trip to San Antonio, take the trolley to Crockett or Commerce, NOT Market!!
By now it was a lot later than we were expecting to leave so we hopped in the car, next stop, New Orleans! The navigation said we would get there around 11:30 so we decided to maybe stop in Houston for dinner. My mom helped us get the address of a place that was on Man vs. Food but Brian said he would not be doing a food challenge! We figured Adam goes to some pretty good spots anyway so we headed there. Well, I headed there while Brian took a nap. We never did make it to the Little Bitty Burger Barn…
People were passing me left and right but all of a sudden I had a cop on a motorcycle behind me. Brian woke up asking if I was okay and I told him I thought I was getting pulled over… and I did. While Brian fumbled around looking for the insurance card that we actually didn’t have (awesome idea to not bring insurance on a 7,000 mile trip) the cop decided to pour salt in the wound saying, “don’t you have a smart phone, you can just pull it up on there…” I explained as politely as I could that no we have cheap phones, thinking maybe he will realize we can’t afford cool phones and let me off? Nope! He told me I can fax the insurance to get rid of the $260 offense and he was nice enough to put that I was doing 75 in a 65, even though he had me at 78. He is a moron because either way it’s $200, thanks for the favor buddy! So yes, even the speeding tickets are bigger in TX. But the crazy thing is, had he gotten me doing 22 above the speed limit (hypothetically of course), the ticket would have been $260… I don’t really think that’s in line with the pricing of my ticket. I would think they would take away my car or something, but an extra $60 bucks? That’s nothing! Which leads me to my next rambling rant... Speed limits are really crap if you think about it. They are really just to turn a profit. I asked Brian what the point is and he gave the typical answer, they’re for safety. There’s more people in the cities so they slow it down for the volume of people. Really? How come in Western TX, the speed limit is 80 but in Houston it’s 65? A little more information for you, in Western TX, every few miles there are these signs: Dust storms VERY possible… ZERO visibility possible… Speed limit 80… drive with caution. Seriously, these signs are all over. Houston is a city, clearly there are more people. When there’s a car in front of you going 70, you physically cannot go faster than him, no need for a speed limit to tell you this. There were times on this trip that the speed limit was 65 going down a windy mountain, I went below the speed limit… I think you should be able to use your discretion.

This also leads me to my next road trip tip of the day. Clearly had I been listening to my last tip of the rule of the 9s, I would not be in this situation, but things happen. My next tip is to make sure you are paying attention when you are in unfamiliar areas. When I got pulled over on the LIE, I thought the speed limit was 65, Brian told me that all Long Island roads have a 55 mph limit, now I know. I do not know the crazy TX rules. The not so nice officer told me that about 2 miles back the speed limit dropped to 65 instead of 70, had I known that, I would have been enjoying a nice TX BBQ meal instead of Burger King chicken fries (which were delicious but fast food is just so gross, I feel sick). So when you find yourself in a strange place, take a look around, watch out for all these secret little signs!

And now for the silver lining, Brian took a look at the ticket to see if there was any fine print. I told him, I would just not pay and just never drive in TX again. He said they would put a warrant out for my arrest… that would be kind of cool to be a fugitive, no? He said no. But they take credit card! So thanks to Chase Freedom Rewards, I will be getting 1% back on my little speeding mishap! Thank you Houston for getting me 2 points closer to my next reward! Plus I told Brian, how many people from NY can say they were pulled over in TX, not too many! So I’m a little more interesting, and so is he for marrying into my interestingness… on to NOLA!!

Busy busy busy

So we arrived in San Antonio late (like 2:30 in the morning) or early I guess Sunday?  We checked in to our last doubletree (sad), got some cookies (yay!) and got our room...421!!  That's our anniversary!!  So crazy, right?  I thought so.  Well we crashed for a few hours then woke up and got ready for another day!  So did anyone ever hear the saying that it's blazing hot out there?  I never actually understood that.  This term was derived and should only be used when describing weather in Texas.  It's September and I literally thought I might go up in flames!  Early in the morning, at night, it's just ALWAYS blazing hot out there!
So we went to Sea World San Antonio in the morning, it was fun!  We had both been to Sea World Orlando but not since we were little so we figured, while we're here!  We fed the sea lions and seals who actually go crazy when they see food, they bark and hit into each other, one just laid there slowly slapping the water with his tail, very funny.  There was one sea lion that was just laying on his back the whole time not even caring that there was food.  I asked the girl if he was sleeping and she said yes.  I asked why he wasn't waking up for food and she explained that they are mammals just like us so when they're full, that's it, they have no interest in eating...riiiiight.  I didn't bother questioning her further on this, even though I have tons of evidence from this trip alone that this statement is very false!
Then it was off to the dolphins!!  We both fed them, and when you feed them, you get to pet them too!!  They're sooooo cute!!  Just a tip, if anyone's planning on going, don't go to the first feeding.  We stood on a line, outside in the inferno forever!  Later we went back and there was no line!  So always go later!  We saw the story of Shamu show with the giant killer whales and it was amazing!  The do everything on cue!  They're just so smart!  We tried to see another show but they unfortunately had to cancel due to a foreign object being dropped in their pool aka some idiot tourist.  Which leads me to my first ramble of the day.  I finally understand why Europeans hate Americans.  I think about 90% of American tourists are complete idiots, so naturally if 90% of what you see are idiots, you're bound to draw this conclusion!  All along this trip we've run into these idiots but let me give you yesterday's examples.  While we were in the giant shark exhibit, they have these floor to ceiling wondows so you can look in the tank, it's really amazing!  Here's Brian with the sharks (FYI we were just in the splash zone, as you can see!):
So you see how there's that little railing just in front of the glass?  Well a bunch of kids came over near us and decided that the railing was not for them so they just went under and started banging the glass.  Their parents stood next to us and didn't say anything.  We were secretly hoping the glass would break and the sharks would eat those kids and their stupid parents.  After making sure I said "no that railing's just there for other people" loud enough that they could hear, we went back to the dolphins.  Now when you feed the dolphins there's a Sea World employee on a microphone so everyone can hear her, explaining the process.  She says you hold the fish just above the water so the dolphins don't have to lunge out of the water to get it and with your free hand you can pet the dolphin, then give them the fish.  She explains that the entire process should take no longer than 3 seconds otherwise it's teasing.  So we were on the observation side watching people feed them and I was counting people holding the fish in the air, swinging it back and forth for over 20 seconds.  I don't know if they realize that teasing an animal is just the same as torturing them but we were soooo aggravated.  And that is my rant about stupid Americans.  So in your travels, please be mindful of rules so that other countries don't hate us!  Thanks! =)
So after we walked around in the blazing heat for a few hours we decided to head back to 421.  Since we almost went up in flames from the heat, we thought we should hit the pool.  Unfortunately by the time we got in the car, got the ac on, came back to the cold room to change and got outside, I wasn't hot anymore!  I went in for a few minutes anyway and then thought I would lay out for a little bit to work back up to blazing and then throw myself in the pool.  I actually ended up falling asleep though!  So after I woke up and Brian was all pruned up, we went back to the room, showered and got ready to go out to eat.  We wanted to do something to do with Texas, so we decided we should go for Mexican.  Another guest at the B&B in Custer had recommended this place called Casa Rio so we thought about that.  In San Antonio they have a trolley/bus system that goes from our hotel all the way around the riverwalk.  So we asked the guy at the desk and he explained where we should get off for the riverwalk.  We took the bus down, got off (did I mention I'm wearing heels that were killing me and I felt the blisters starting??) and followed signs for the riverwalk.  It was totally not what I pictured at all.  We were thinking there would be restaurants with outdoor seating all over the place, shops, the works!  We walked around and saw like 2 restaurants and a whole lot of nothing (other than some shady characters).  So we texted google Casa Rio to find the address, put on our "we're tourists" hats and pulled out our map!  It didn't look too far so we walked over.  While walking over there we discovered the real riverwalk!  We were at some horrible fake part of the riverwalk!  At this point, we were dying from the heat so we didn't want anything to do with eating outside on the river!  We got to Casa Rio and took our table inside.  Now I know I've been impressing everyone with all the food I've been trying but this one takes the cake!  First, I asked which she would recommend, the sangria or the margarita and she said they could do both together - okay!  Then we ordered the food.  We got an appetizer - flautas - I have no idea what that is, but it was good and I ate it!  Then I got enchiladas and a chicken taco for my dinner.  They brought it out and I'm not gonna lie, it was NOT pretty!  But we're in Texas!  So I scraped the lettuce and tomato off my chicken taco and it was actually pretty good!  The enchiladas were even better!  I couldn't bring myself to trying the beans because of what they looked like but I did have some of the rice!
Brian started to not feel well so we took a cab back to the hotel.  We relaxed a little bit and then when he was feeling better we took the trolley back down to go to the world's best (they said so) dueling piano bar, Howl at the Moon!  Brian stuck with his Bud Lite, Miller Lite and I ordered a Dr Feelgood which is just every fruity rum and grenadine - can't go wrong!  Oh and it was served in a glass the size of my arm-FUN!  So they have 2 people playing at a time but they switch every hour or so but when they switch, all 4 will be up there for a few songs.  They were so funny and so talented!  They have pianos, guitars, drums and a crazy keyboard thing that looks like a guitar!  Each person could play all of them and they all just know every song!  Since our drinks were ridiculously expensive we did not request any songs (you have to give them money) so we let everyone else!  They actually even had a contest for a bucket of beer and a free happy hour!  You had to go up with what you thought was the worst 80s song and each person had to beat the last person's song by $1.  So they played all the songs as they would come up (I loved most of them) and in the end She's my Cherry Pie was the winner at $26.  If you do the math, that little contest earned them over $300 in about 45 minutes!  It was a lot of fun.  Here's 2 of the performers singing a Taylor Swift song:
We stayed out for a while but wanted to catch the last trolley so we left around midnight.  We got back to the room, passed out and slept like babies- oh but first got more cookies from the front desk!  This morning we're going to visit the Alamo and go over to the cool side of the riverwalk!  Then we'll be back on the road to New Orleans!  Hope everyone has a good day!

The Mega Post…

Okay I’m sorry for the delay but this trip is totally catching up with me and there has been LOTS of driving lately! It will not happen again! Now let me go through this blog and change all the tenses since I totally did write it yesterday (Friday) with all intentions of posting last night. Look at that, I even got the day right! Okay here you go…
I’m not sure why I didn’t include this the other day but this is the sunset we pulled over to see on the way to San Diego. Unfortunately I was driving so I kept trying to see it in the rearview mirror and then the sign popped up to pull over! Thank you San Diego!!
So my boss Kelly was nice enough to let us stay in his condo in San Diego which worked out awesome! The condo is actually IN Petco Park which is where the Padres play so the huge balcony overlooks the stadium. Also, he arranged for the Padres to have a game that night right around when we were getting there, way to go the extra mile! So needless to say Brian was loving life… and so was I! Do you have any idea what a nice feeling it is to get changed and get ready to go out and think, eh I look sooo tired then hear thousands of people cheering for you?!? Thanks guys! So after my ego boost, we headed out to the gaslamp district which was conveniently located right where we were! Unfortunately we were going out to eat around 10 and a lot of places stop serving food around then. It’s a really cute area with lots of outdoor seating and just tons of restaurants and bars. So we walked around for a while and then decided on Asti for some Italian. We got mussels & clams for an appetizer and they were delicious and so was the bread that we used to sop up all the extra yummy broth! For dinner Brian got veal marsala since veal is on the list of things I won’t make (it’s baby cows!). Judging from the fact that there was not a crumb left on his plate, I would say he liked it! I got the potato & spinach gnocchi in a creamy gorgonzola sauce, sounds fancy huh? Yea I’m pretty fancy. It was sooooooo good but it was soooo much so I sadly could not be a champ and finish it. I think I may have still been full from Kam’s, not sure. Since neither of us could move we decided to just go back and crash. Oh and here’s Brian on the balcony/in Heaven…
Since I was so health conscious in ordering my dinner the night before, I decided to go to the gym this morning to make myself feel better, it worked a little. It also helps that I didn’t feel like I was going to die. I didn’t include this earlier because I was embarrassed but I’ve been trying to keep up with the couch to 5k running program and when I did it in Lake Tahoe I literally thought I would die. My throat was killing me, my lungs were killing me, it was really really bad! So I was thinking wow a week away from the gym and I’m this bad already! But after successfully completing week 4 day 1 in San Diego I decided that Brian was right and it wasn’t me but the fact that I was running 8,000 feet above sea level, which is a bit more than I’m used to! Phew! Then it was back to get ready for our next busy day. We got ready to leave and headed over to Mission Beach. This is the famous one with the wooden rollercoaster and all the carnival looking stuff. We walked down on the beach and it was such nice weather! Oh and the sand was so soft, it’s like what I imagine walking in confectioner’s sugar would be like (yum!). Of course I had to test out the waters… yup it was freezing!! We walked a little more, then back to the car, my favorite activity!
Now we headed over to the San Diego Zoo since Adrienne and Gary said we had to (thanks guys!). We got in and waited on line for a bus tour. The bus tour takes you around and shows you 70% of the park which we figured would be good since we were short on time. If anyone is interested in doing this, go for it! In the beginning I hated it because we were on the opposite side of everything and this stupid girl across from me thought she was cool and was like sprawled out on the arm rest so I have her giant head and arm in half my pictures! But then kharma struck and we saw fun stuff on our side! Brian and I made sure to spread out while oohing and ahhhing. The tour was about 40 minutes and then we decided to re-visit the hippos, orangutans and polar bears. The zoo isn’t actually too huge (only 100 acres which is less than my sister’s yard!) and I feel like we did pretty good on time and seeing everything we wanted to. So if anyone is planning a trip out there and doesn’t think you can cover the zoo in 3 hours, you can! Here is Brian and the gigantic hippo that was napping!
Then of course, it was time to head back to our favorite place-the car! We made some PB&Js and hit the open highway! So I’m pretty sure that 90% of the Southern California population lives between LA and San Diego. Once we left San Diego there was nothing! Hills, giant piles of rocks, and dirt- yup that’s pretty much it! We were stopped for some racial profiling a few times but that’s about it. Oh yes, they call it the Border Patrol inspection but we’re traveling with out of state plates, a giant cooler covered by a blanket and the cover pulled over in the trunk, I would think that looks a little suspicious! But apparently border patrol does not! I rolled down the window and they said “have a great day!” I mean of course I’m glad they didn’t make us empty out the entire car but I mean come on, make me feel a little safe guys, they’ll let anyone in! So when we hit AZ, the scenery changed big time, we were now looking at mountains, dirt and cacti … or cactuses… hmmm spell check’s not helping me out on that one! Well it’s still a whole lot of nothing!

Oh and I’ve decided to give you guys some road trip tips. Today’s road trip tip of the day is the rule of 9s. Generally if you go 9 mph over, the cops will not bother you. I’ve done much research on this and every time I’ve ever been pulled over I was doing way over 9. I mean of course when you’re looking at nothing, sometimes it’s easy to go a bit over 9 but just bring it back if you notice. Also by doing 9 over on these long trips you’re shaving down precious minutes! On a 6 hour trip, we cut half an hour off! Obviously if you do the math, it should have been more but realistically you should stop for gas a few times on a 6 hour trip or your trip will be drastically longer when you’re stuck on the side of the road in the desert! And that is your tip for the day!

So now back to writing in the present tense (phew that was confusing). We stayed just outside Tucson with my godmother Lois and her husband John last night. We got there in record time so we were able to sit and chat for a while and then go out to grab a bite to eat. So remember how like everything on this trip is magical? Yea they have a magical Chili’s where you walk in on a Friday night at 7 and you’re seated right away! I know, it sounds crazy but it happened! We actually love Chili’s but barely go because an hour is a bit too long to stand around just waiting! So we had a yummy dinner and then headed back to their house. Luckily Lois and John have done a lot of traveling so we got lots of helpful tips for the rest of our journey! And we even got some behind the scenes info. Did you know that in New Orleans, everyone walks around causing mayhem all night long and then in the early early morning they have people that come and clean up the street to make it nice and clean for the next day? I can’t wait to see this!! So we stayed up for as long as I physically could and then it was back to bed! This morning I woke up, showered and got ready to head out for the longest leg of our trip! It takes about 13 hours but since we’ll be crossing TWO time zones (thanks to AZ not believing in daylight savings) it will be about 15 hours-FUN! So thanks to my amazing godmother and her wonderful husband for hosting us! We had a great time and wish we could stay longer!
Oh and I almost forgot to mention, they have THE softest towels I’ve ever used in my life. I asked Brian what I should wear today and asked if he thought it would be acceptable for me to just keep the towel on, it’s that soft! Oh and when we went to leave bright and early this morning, she made us lunches (sandwiches and my favorite- pickles!) and a snack bag with muffins and cookies! (Gym friends please ignore that last part!) Yumm!

So then it was off to meet our friends Josh and Kayleigh for breakfast. They live about 40 minutes from Tucson so we met up there at The Good Egg. There was actually a lot of people there! The most I’ve ever seen in Tucson! So I was thinking eh we have a long trip today so I’ll order a short stack of pancakes. Thankfully the waitress asked if I’d ever had their pancakes and when I said no she recommended I just get one. Yea it was bigger than the plate, so obviously bigger than my face! Insane, I have no idea how they flip that thing, but who cares! So we finished breakfast and then you guessed it… We’re so glad we got to see Josh & Kayleigh even just for a little bit!!
So today is our longest drive of the entire trip – 900 miles. We finished going through AZ and we stopped at The Thing after seeing a bunch of billboards for it… we paid the $1 admission to go see The Thing and I swore we were going to walk out the door and be instantly killed. I mean it was a really nice place, you guys should check it out! Well obviously we weren’t killed and now we can say we saw The Thing!!! We even got a magnet from there to prove it! Then we went through New Mexico for a little bit and then Texas. And then some more Texas. And then, yea just a little more Texas! This state is sooooo huge! I think it’s never ending and we’re not even going all the way through! So here’s some observations of Texas… When we got in they had a sign that said Speed Limit 80, at night 65. This is so awesome because I’ve never seen a speed limit of 80 (except in Canada but that’s km so that doesn’t count). Let me tell you why it’s not awesome though… of our 13 ½ hour trip today, 7 hours are in the dark. What makes it just a little worse is that the navigation is based on 80 so the minutes just keep adding up! Texas also smells. For a while, it was cow shit, that’s just not pleasant. Then we switched over to dirt, also just not fun. Then a mix of dirt and grass, my allergies are super excited for the entire day we have here tomorrow! I’m hoping once we get to San Antonio, the stinks stop. And a final observation of Texas is wow this place is dark! I mean you can see like 100 feet in front of you, so I guess that’s okay, right? I just wonder what’s waiting after that 100 feet though… Oh and I forgot to mention what the worst part of driving back east is. On the way to CA, you’re chasing these beautiful sunsets and I have tons of pictures to prove it! Unfortunately heading east, they’re all behind us so we can watch them in the mirrors but no pictures =(. They really are something else though! The one great thing about driving through nothing with zero lights is the stars. It is unreal how many and how bright they are when you look up out here- Amazing!

Okay so since this is like a 3 day post rolled into one, I’ll give you a second road trip tip. One of the most important things to consider when planning a road trip is music. Your ATTC will be sleeping sometimes, or typing on a laptop, or maybe you run out of things to talk about. Unless you have satellite radio, you must plan for these times. I suggest not even knowing what you’re bringing. I grabbed a bunch of stuff, mostly old which is good because you need a little surprise sometimes. Like for example, today on the longest trip, Bri was having a snoozefest and I was dragging at the wheel… Hootie & the Blowfish to the rescue! Not that I wasn’t loving Daughtry, Kelly Clarkson & Bon Jovi but sometimes it’s gotta be Hootie. Or as I used in Wyoming, the My Girl soundtrack. Gotta keep yourself on your toes on these long trips! Okay well I have to go sing to Bri to keep him awake. It’s almost 11 TX time (12 NY) and we won’t get to San Antonio until about 2:30. Needless to say I’ll be uploading, then sleeping so by the time anyone reads this it will be Sunday! Happy Sunday everyone! Oh and most important, HAPPY ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY to Kristin and Anthony (my wonderful sister and brother-in-law)!!! Feel free to wish her a happy anniversary if you’re reading! Nite y’all! =)
